A unique patented method for the
conversion of paper to digital ECG traces
ECGScan
2
Background
Despite a technology that permits storage of
raw data in digital format since many years, a
vast majority of ECG analyses is still performed
on paper printouts, either directly on paper
copies or with the support of on-screen calipers
methods applied to the scanned printout
converted to a digital image format.
This mode of operation has sometimes caused
some confusion in the terminology and in
particular on the definition of a “digital ECG”.

ECGScan: The AMPS tool for the conversion of
paper to digital ECG traces
The task of
actually deriving
a digital ECGs
from paper
printouts is now
possible thanks
to ECGScan.
4
ECGScan compatibility
ECGScan can handle ECG images scanned with
standard scanners and medium resolution (200
DPI or higher) with at least a 8bit grayscale
color depth.
Accepted image input formats include:
.bmp .jpg .png .tif .gif
Output formats include:
- HL7 FDA XML
- AMPS XML
- Binary

Grid Detection
Detection of underlying
grid accounting and
correcting for both tilt
(angle) and distortion
effects.
After the Grid has been
detected, the Status Bar shows
the Grid Detection results
6
Lead based detection
Lead-based detection of each ECG waveform.
Simultaneous waveform detection options based
on predetermined model typical of paper ECG
printouts (e.g. 3x4 with long lead II at the
bottom).
Digitized ECG with user-defined sampling-rate
and amplitude resolution.
Limb Leads Derivation ( I II III aVR aVL
aVF) from the digitization of only two of them.
7
Other Settings
Manual Lead Time Offsets.
Automatic Leads Time Synchronization.
Limb Leads Derivation ( I II III aVR aVL
aVF) from the digitization of only two of
them.
Executable in both standalone mode or fully
controlled by a client application through the
usage of an API library based on Common
Object Interface (COM) technology.

News in ECGScan3
Totally redesigned User Interface with user-
friendly graphics making ECGScan3 much easier
to use.
Updated and more complete waveforms detection
algorithm.
Addition of several new image processing tools
that both speed up the process of digitalization
and enhance the accuracy of the waveform
detection.
HL7 XML FDA output format.
